Acting Locally, Thinking Globally: CCL Responds to the Climate Crisis
WHILE CLIMATE CHANGE MAY FEEL like an insurmountable challenge, the people at The Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL) have a practical nonpartisan solution: the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (HR 763). This legislation would put a fee on fossil fuels at the point at which they enter the economy, whether it’s gas from the pump or a carbon intensive product. The fee would increase gradually over time according to a set schedule, preventing major shocks to the greater economy. Companies would raise prices to compensate for carbon-intensive products and energy, making low carbon alternatives more competitive for consumers. This strategy will move both the energy industry and consumers toward cleaner, cheaper options.
The money collected from the carbon fee will be paid out to the American people monthly as a dividend to every citizen, much like the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend. The government will not keep any of the money from the carbon fee. The legislation can reduce greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2030, and 90% by 2050.
The San Fernando Valley chapter of CCL is one of 400 chapters across the nation building support in Congress for a national bipartisan solution to the climate crisis.
