Educating about the Beauty and Value of California Native Plants
OVER A CENTURY AGO a young British horticulturist named Theodore Payne arrived in California. When he saw that native plant life was being destroyed to make way for housing and agriculture, Payne devoted his life to educating Californians about their local ecosystem and the value and beauty of local native plants.
When we moved to Los Angeles in the early ’90s, we were inspired to tear out our weedy lawn and plant a beautiful native garden and meadow of plants we discovered at the TPF nursery. In addition to using very little water, native plants support the local fauna, including hummingbirds and native bees.
Visit TPF’s nursery, brimming with native saplings, flowering bushes and fragrant sages, and you’ll instantly feel a deeper connection to our environs. The workers at the nursery are knowledgeable about everything from matching plants with microclimates to finding a tree that will grow to a specific height.
TPF also hosts an annual native garden tour and offers classes in subjects such as native garden design, botany and bird watching. TPF’s efforts show people the beauty of native plants and help Southern California’s plant communities—reputed to be the most diverse and endangered in North America—recover and flourish.
