Native Plant Nursery Preserves Native Species and Connects Angelenos to Nature
HAHAMONGA NATIVE PLANT NURSERY, a program of the Arroyo Seco Foundation, is tucked away in a corner of the Hahamongna Watershed Park in northwest Pasadena. Visitors often tell us the nursery is a magical place, and it’s easy to see why.
In addition to viewing plants in our retail sales yard, visitors enjoy strolling through our native plant gardens, where a meandering footpath allows them to observe mature specimens of numerous California natives. Seeing these plants inspires many to introduce appropriate varieties into their own landscapes.
Our gardens feature many plants native to Southern California, including almost every variety and hybrid of native sage, mature manzanitas, toyons, bladderpods, narrowleaf milkweed, and many more. We use many of these plants for propagation.
Native plants have low water needs, but that’s only one of their benefits. They support our ecosystem by providing habitat and food for birds, hummingbirds, butterflies, and native bees.
Many of the California native plants we propagate, from cuttings and seed, are endemic to Southern California and the Arroyo Seco watershed. We offer them for sale to the public and for restoration projects. Our sales yard includes a variety of small flowering plants, shrubs, and trees such as the Pasadena Oak and Western Redbud, plus native seeds like the California poppy.
