Artful Designers Create Native Plant Sanctuaries
THINKING OF REDESIGNING YOUR YARD? With a native garden, you can boost your home’s curb appeal with a landscape of color, reduce water usage, and restore native habitat. Since 2013, Amanda Claverie and Sydney Harrington of Garden Natives have been designing garden sanctuaries across Southern California.
“We luck out all the time with our clients,” says Amanda. After speaking with their references, we suspect it’s more than luck. Amanda and Sydney design what makes sense for their clients in terms of function and budget. They encourage their clients to participate in the design process: taking into account a clients’ preferred color palate or how the space will function for the whole family- kids and dogs included.
Garden Natives specializes in CA native plants and installs irrigation, lighting and small water features. They are mindful about designing spaces to catch and repurpose rainwater back into the garden.
Amanda and Sydney love people, plants, and creatures, whether it’s their clients’ pets, or the birds and insects that thrive within their garden creations. They are thrilled by the wonder of California flora. Amanda says, “as soon as native plants arrive onsite, word goes out, and often within minutes hummingbirds and bees appear. It’s very fulfilling.”

While walking my dog, I noticed two houses along our walk being landscaped by Garden Natives, and I really liked what I saw. We hired them do redo two entire sections of our sloped garden. Amanda and Sydney came up with a beautiful plan for us, incorporating both native and drought tolerant plants. They understood that we like a casual garden, and they took into consideration garden resiliency and safety for our dog and grandchild, as they spend time in the garden. The final results are stunning, and my husband and I love to sit out on the terrace and look out on our colorful garden. We love that the garden keeps changing and surprising us. There is no question that Amanda and Sydney know what they’re doing. They know how to listen to their clientele and they understand budgets. We like their maintenance plan, and we love seeing them when we need more plants. I am so grateful that I found Garden Natives and happily recommend them to others.

Garden Natives did a great job of landscaping our front and back yards. They took the time to really listen to our ideas and then presented us with a detailed proposal. We appreciated the collaborative aspect of the design and how well everything was itemized for the project. We are thrilled with the final results and happy to recommend Garden Natives to others looking for a landscaping service.

Garden Natives transformed our stereotypical lawn into an eco-friendly place with the installation of drought tolerant plants, a dry creek bed and a decomposed granite pathway. I’m usually a micromanager of projects like this, but the immediate confidence I felt with Amanda and Sydney allowed me to throw caution to the wind this time. After receiving an impressive and detailed set of plans, my wife and I had the opportunity to review everything and make change requests. We also took advantage of California’s rebate program for replacing lawns with drought tolerant plants and Garden Natives was able to guide us with that process. They completed the job efficiently and came back for a 6-month check-up at which time they addressed any issues. We’re really happy with the whole process and think that others will likewise be pleased after hiring Garden Natives.

We are very, very happy with Garden Natives. The transformation of our traditional lawn into one that is California native/drought tolerant is exactly what we wanted. We checked out a couple of companies for the job but we liked what we saw on their website and their plan for our lawns. The plan incorporated everything we were concerned about. Amanda and Sydney were extraordinarily hands-on. They were here every day while the job was in process and responded to all of our questions and concerns quickly. Every detail was planned out in advance and their workers really seemed to love what they were doing. We were able to take advantage of a state funded turf rebate program which Garden Natives assisted with by meeting the needed criteria. They sub-contracted the design and construction of wooden steps (12 foot rise and about 50 feet long) which also turned out great. Amanda and Sydney love what they do and it shows. We welcome anyone to drive by and see the results. Their work speaks for itself.

Rehabbing our sloped front yard was an ambitious task that we soon admitted could use some professional assistance. In our initial interview with Sydney and Amanda it was instantly apparent they were a great fit to help us realize our vision of the finished project. We shared our ideas for design and layout and discussed options for drought-tolerant plants. The whole project, including installation of a circular retaining wall and raised curb went according to plan. Amanda and Sydney are so easy to work with. Their quarterly maintenance makes it easy to refresh the mulch and trim back the deer grasses. We’ve always felt comfortable with the value we receive from their fair rates, which were clear from the start. No surprises. We have happily recommended them to family and neighbors.

My wife and I wanted to improve the appearance of our yard, so we reached out to Garden Natives. This was our first time focusing on a landscaping project. We knew we wanted a drought tolerant and low maintenance yard that included lavender. After taking into consideration our general ideas, Garden Natives provided us a detailed design proposal with several options. Their team came in and worked fast and efficiently to transform our yard into a beautiful space. As part of the service, they plan to come back and do 6-month follow up visit to check on everything. We are very pleased with the quality of work and service that Garden Natives provides.
