Group Combats Limited Housing Through Innovative Community Partnerships
NO ONE WOULD CHOOSE to raise a child in substandard housing, but many families face limited options in Los Angeles. Since 1990 Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA) has been giving low-income, hardworking families and individuals the chance to own decent and affordable homes.
To qualify for one of Habitat LA’s volunteer-built, zero-interest loan homes, partner homebuyers must:
- demonstrate need
- contribute 200-500 hours of sweat equity into the construction and/or rehabilitation of their home
- have good credit
- be able to make a small down payment
Habitat LA requires that partner homeowners complete Habitat and HUD home buyer education programs, which teaches them budgeting skills and basic home and yard maintenance.
Habitat LA is also a leader in green building, incorporating elements that improve affordability and sustainability for homeowners and communities, such as energy-efficient design, recyclable building materials and drought tolerant landscaping.
When neighbors, volunteers and partner home- owners work together, they build more than just a house. Through Habitat projects, people gain knowledge, skills and confidence and develop a sense of pride in their community.
