Protecting Birds and Habitat Through Education, Restoration and Research
SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1910, the Los Angeles Audubon Society has come a long way in serving its mission to protect and preserve birds and their habitat.
LA Audubon’s education and conservation programs provide hands-on opportunities to take part in habitat restoration projects and wildlife monitoring projects.
Some projects include:
- two community science monitoring programs that collect data, one for Western Snowy Plover along the LA County coastline and another for the Least Tern colony at Venice Beach
- LA Audubon’s bird-friendly tree trimming guidelines which continue to be adopted by local jurisdictions
- four monthly bird walks where all are welcome, led by experts in bird identification
- LA Audubon’s school-aged outdoor classrooms that teach the importance of habitat preservation to over 5000 under-served students annually and aim to inspire the next generation of environmental leaders. These pupils study local ecosystems located at the Ballona Wetlands, Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook and the Santa Monica Bay
These programs have inspired projects such as the student-produced “Kill Your Lawn” comic book, which offers tips to transform your yard into a water-wise garden.
Becoming a member of LA Audubon not only helps protect local birds, it provides important opportunities to build community and educate LA youth about concrete ways they can improve the environment.
